2009-2010 Resource Efficiency Initiatives

Sustainable Novato places attention and effort on resource use reduction and reuse, as well efficiency, setting the following measurable targets:

  • Reduce per capita energy waste in Novato by 10% by 2011
  • Reduce per capita water consumption by 10% by 2011
  • Reduce overall tonnage of solid waste to landfill by 10%/yr, increase Novato recycling portion 20% by 2011
  • Reduce Sustainable Novato members resource & energy “footprint” by 30% by 2011
  • Work for institution of a landfill mitigation fee earmarked for zero-waste & climate protection programs
  • Work to establish curbside collection of food waste for composting
  • Work to end the practice of landfilling green waste ( “alternate daily cover”)

Sustainable Novato planned actions toward achieving these goals include the following:

  • Locate or develop data sources for our metrics
  • Collaborate and ally with other organizations and agencies, e.g. North Marin Water District, City of Novato, Novato Sanitary District, Marin Climate & Energy Partnership, Marin Energy Authority, etc.
  • Research & locate best practices and existing standards
  • Messaging: Education, outreach, edutainment, and advocacy through our ongoing Forums series, web-based media and email newsletters, print-media releases, and innovative new media approaches.
